Elder Street Artist Lofts

There is no Artspace project which sits on land with greater historical interest than the Elder Street Artist Lofts. A municipal cemetery was established on the site in the 1840s, and over the next few decades thousands of people were buried here. The cemetery was not maintained, however, and in the early 1920s the Houston City Council decided to build a new municipal hospital on the site. Completed in 1924 and long known as the Jefferson Davis Hospital, the building is a handsome red brick structure in the Classical Revival style. Houston’s rapid growth soon rendered it inadequate, and in 1938 a new hospital replaced it. Over the years, the building housed a variety of tenants, but it stood vacant for two decades before Artspace entered the picture. Completed in 2005, this $6.3 million project houses 34 live/work units, many of which offer spectacular views of the downtown skyline. The building’s original terrazzo floors, high ceilings and large window openings all were retained. One feature of the project is a partial “green” roof — the first Artspace project to feature this environmentally sustainable amenity.

The Houstoner Project

Revolution is our obligation: our hope of evolution. The Revolution is in the individual spirit, or it is nowhere. It is for all, or it is nothing. If it is seen as having any end, it will never truly begin. We can’t stop here. We must go on. We must take the risks.

"We play a great mix of music at a typically lower volume and can fit in most any type of setting. Our music consists of a blend of everything from 1960’s Pop (Beatles/Mamas & Papas) to Contemporary Easy Listening (Aimee Mann/The Shins). There is a lot of Americana and Texas Singer/Songwriter mixed into the set lists. We also play some original material that works into this blend of styles very well.  A sample song list and demo videos are available on our Facebook page & Youtube, Contact us at fools2945@gmail.com, 713-628-2822"

"Owner Jim Pirtle's iconic downtown bar, music and art/performance venue Notsuoh (Houston spelled backwards) has by this time achieved a legendary, almost mythical reputation for weirdness. One of the employees we spoke with called the place an electric art dive, while Pirtle himself says the space is the result of a marriage between a historical building more than 100 years old with the collection of a thrift-store junkie. Just some of the wonders to behold include old bicycles hanging from the rafters, nude female mannequins turned into works of art, a knight's armor, and an old piano encrusted with what appears to be some kind of gems, remains of a stained glass window, dominoes, and assorted other trinkets. ..." via Houston Press
